Elect non-Fascists in 2018 / You're Probably a Fascist if ...

This picture recently appeared / went viral online.  I'd prefer to say "elect non-Fascists, November 2018."  And using the old saw to explain ...

You're Probably a Fascist if ...

If you want a military parade for no clear reason ... you're probably a fascist.

If you rip kids from their parents just to "teach them a lesson" ... you're probably a fascist.

If you say "it's complicated" when it comes to condemning the murder and cutting up into pieces of dissident journalists ... you're probably a fascist.

If you call a free (and yes at times an annoying) press (it's THEIR JOB...) "the enemy of the people" ... you're probably a fascist.

If you say, "Don't trust your own eyes / ears, trust ME" ... you're probably a fascist.

If you _encourage_ the police to knock around arrestees ... you're probably a fascist.

If you pine for being "Great Leader for Life" ... you're probably a fascist.

Do we really want to PAY THE COST of killing NATO?

Speaking PURPOSEFULLY and DIRECTLY into the CLOUD ...

Regarding the truly scary Fox News sponsored Tucker Carlson / Donald Trump interview (Tue, July 17, 2018) about letting the U.S. unilaterally walk away from our NATO obligations

There are SO MANY things wrong here:

(1) Let’s be clear, bowtied Tucker Carlson and Donald Trump are NOT really talking here of Montenegro but rather of the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

(2) Neither Tucker Carlson, nor his son Buckley, nor famously “bone spur” Donald Trump served or serve in the military. So the scenario they propose would involve sending other people’s parents and children to war.

(3) NATO exists precisely to KEEP THE PEACE.

a. Wars start as a result of miscalculations. BOTH the 1950-53 Korean War and the 1990-91 Persian Gulf War BEGAN as a result of, let’s be kind, “unfortunate” / “poorly worded” / “not thought-through” statements by U.S. Government officials of MUCH LOWER RANK than the President, which _suggested_ that the United States did not think South Korea / Kuwait were worth defending. Even Serbia which doesn’t necessarily consider Montenegro to be a “real country” may take a crack now at Montenegro. But more to the point again, the Russians may now think they’ve been given permission to destabilize and take over the Baltic Republics.

b. Even little countries under threat can come up with their own strategies / defenses. Think Israel…

i. If I were Poland today, if I don’t ALREADY have a dozen or so nuclear weapons quietly given to it a few years ago by the outgoing Obama Administration I’d be looking build them or acquire them now.

ii. I’m more or less certain that the Czechs have made similar contingency plans and acquired the necessary materials during the Vaclav Havel administration. The current Czech President Zeman is basically the Czechs’ equivalent of Trump (and almost certainly supported by Putin). Nevertheless even if Zeman is a stooge of Putin it’d be doubtful that the Czechs would easily give up any nuclear material that they’ve husbanded during Havel’s time (and perhaps even previous to Havel’s time) because it would give the Czech leadership more options. And even if the Czechs did not have weapons grade nuclear materials in their possession, with operating nuclear power plants they CERTAINLY have access to all the fissionable material they’d ever need to make a good deal of dirty bombs.

iii. With regard to the Baltic States. Perhaps they already have nuclear materials themselves from “stray” tactical, etc nuclear weapons left on their soil, with the collapse of the Soviet Union to make / maintain a number of true nuclear weapons on their own. Then, as in the case of the Czechs (and the Poles), the Baltic States would _certainly_ have enough fissionable materials to make a whole series of dirty bombs to (1) certainly make the centers of St. Petersburg and Moscow and (2) possibly make the centers of _every single one of the cities_ that just hosted the World Cup uninhabitable IF the Russians chose to try to take them over again.

Think about it. THIS IS WHY NATO EXISTS … to help make the individual countries of Europe secure so that they wouldn’t have to “go their own way.” I’LL say it with absolute certainty, a Russian adventure in the Baltic would bring with it World War III or large scale destruction / poisoning across Russia itself to make it utterly not worth it. But if NATO remains around, such a conflict remains simply unthinkable and I would think that for the sake of the whole world (and even of Russia) THAT WOULD BE A GOOD THING.

So Tucker and Donald… DON’T BE IDIOTS. Chamberlain was an IDIOT. He dressed like you Tucker and had the intelligence / naiveté of you Donald. If you proceed to destroy NATO those of us left to tell about it will HATE YOU and LAUGH YOU TO SCORN. You’ll be remembered as being even stupider than Chamberlain was.

Should POLAND be GIVEN NUCLEAR WEAPONS?

Writing PURPOSEFULLY "into the cloud" :-) --

Question: In light of Donald Trump's recent election as President of the U.S., should the POLES be TRANSFERRED A FEW DOZEN NUCLEAR WEAPONS prior to the departure of the Obama Administration? They've certainly EARNED their right to self-defense and CERTAINLY Obama's grandfather WHO SERVED IN PATTON'S THIRD ARMY during WW II would approve.

For my part, I have no doubt that the Czech Republic, idiot of a President that they have now as well notwithstanding, has both the technical capacity (Temelín, Jáchimov, a technical knowledge base frankly second to none) and perhaps even the materials to make a bomb TOMORROW, or NEXT WEEK or NEXT MONTH or THREE YEARS from now when said idiot's term ends. (My parents were Czech and one of my earliest memories is that of the Soviet Union invading my parents' country on my mother's birthday back in 1968).

My sense is POLAND has this capacity as well though a nuclear program on Poland's part COULD, IN FACT, MAKE THE RUSSIANS "MORE NERVOUS" THAN WITH THE CZECHS ;-). But then WHY NOT JUST GIVE THE POLES 20 BOMBS (or not give them to them, OR JUST MAKE IT A REALLY BIG QUESTION MARK)?

Yes, I suppose it would be(come) somewhat ironic that POLAND COULD BECOME CENTRAL EUROPE'S ISRAEL ;-) ... Does Israel have the bomb? It's never admitted that it does, but EVERYBODY assumes so ... but IT WOULD KEEP THE PEACE. Like Israel, POLAND WOULD NOT THREATEN ANYBODY ... as long as its own independence was not once again threatened.

And IT WOULD NOT EVEN BE NECESSARY THAT POLAND actually _had the bomb_ JUST THAT THE QUESTION MARK BE RAISED. But certainly twenty bombs (or "twenty bombs") on Polish soil or perhaps ANYWHERE ... would probably do it. LET PUTIN _NEVER_ KNOW FOR SURE.

And as I mentioned above Obama's _white granddad_ WOULD CERTAINLY HAVE APPROVED.

Open Letter to the Mayors of Los Angeles, New York and Chicago all State / Local Officials of Good Will, Individual Police Officers and to the Youth of our Nation

To our Nation's Mayors / State and Local Officials: In the name of God and then all that is good in our Country, I ask you to categorically refuse to allow, without any exception whatsoever, the Resources and Personnel under your Jurisdiction, Command or Control to be put into service of any program for the mass round-up / deportation of undocumented aliens in / around your Jurisdiction.

One of the particular Horrors of the Nazi-era Holocaust was that the Nazis often utilized local police forces to help them in the round-up of Jews.  Notably, the Nazis used occupied Paris' own police force to round-up the city's Jews for them and then used the city's facilities like Stadiums to hold them and process them before "deporting them East" ... in cattle cars ... to Auschwitz ... to die.

Significant numbers of police officers in our major cities are Hispanics.  There are few assignments that would cause more obvious morale problems / divisions in the nation's police forces than compelling local law enforcement officials to help in the round-up / deportations of people who could be (or in any case were just like) their relatives or friends.

To individual police officers / law enforcement officials: The Catholic Church recognizes the right to selective conscientious objection, the principle being that NO ONE should be compelled to do something that is fundamentally against one's conscience.  It should seem self-evident that MANY OF YOU will have FUNDAMENTAL ISSUES OF CONSCIENCE with ripping kindly, Rosary praying grandmothers from their homes, or parents from their children to deport them.  Many of you would sincerely be able to say that you simply _did not_ "enter into the academy" to do that kind of "work."  The Catholic Church recognizes your Right to refuse to do that kind of "work," or even to assist in such operations in _any_ way (like simply "standing around" providing "crowd control" while some "elite squad" does this kind of action "down the block.")

Finally, to our nation's youth: Please do not volunteer and please refuse assignment to any "elite force" tasked with this kind of "work."  There are a limited number of grandmothers or desperate parents that you can rip from their sobbing children before this will _change you_.  Do not become the Gestapo that ALL OF US have learned to hate.

I ask all of this in the name of a God who looks down upon us, loves all of us and does forgive us our sins when we fall.  Let us _not_ go down a path before us that looks ALL TOO MUCH like that of Germany in 1933.

In Christ,

Fr. Dennis Kriz, OSM
pastor honestly by chance of a small / lovely / random parish
St. Philip Benizi, Fullerton, CA
who will have to put myself in front of deportation squads if the nightmares I see come to pass.

Charlie Marik's First Day of School

Translated by Fr. Dennis Zdeněk Kriz, OSM from: F. Háj, Školák Kája Mařík (1943)

Charlie Marik's mom was getting ready to send her youngest son to first grade in school. Dad, a gamekeeper by trade, tall, broad shouldered, sporting a long gray beard, called out: "Okay Mama, we have to head out. We have an hour's journey, and hopefully we'll have time to still stop in at church."
Charlie's mother crossed his forehead and admonished him: "Now Charlie, be good and behave and stop at Aunt Albina's to remind her to come in for the goose!  Remember to greet everybody! And don't wipe your nose on your sleeve! You have a handkerchief in your pocket for that. And now with God, you two be on your way!"
Charlie didn't really want to go. Until then grew up in the country, in the woods, in his parents' orchard. His mother let him get away with more than the others who were all grown. Dad had been nearly the whole day in the woods, and when Charlie heard that must go to school, shook his curly head and declared, "But Mom I can't go! Where would I find the time?"
It took a long while before Kaja understood that he's going to have to go. And when his mother told him: "In a week you must go," he curled red lips and smiled: "Gee, a week!  That's still a long time! Mom that's like a year, right? " And he ran off into the woods.
But the week to flew by like an hour, today the day arrived in which Kaja had to set-out with his father to go to school. The only thing that consoled him were the pockets that his mom had sewn on his jacket and his pants.. He proudly told his dad: "Look, I'm already like a big man. I must have a hundred pockets!"
"A hundred?" replied his father. "You've got three."
"And isn't more than a hundred, Dad?"
"Just wait, you'll learn all about this in school!"

Charlie skipped alongside his father and by his tall, sturdy figure, seemed to be like a little hříbek (a classic kind of edible mushroom.  The Czechs like most Slavs traditionally love picking mushrooms) under an oak tree. But he was far more excitable than a little hříbek.
As soon as he spotted the steeple of the church, Chalie stopped: "But Dad, I don't really have to go thereLet's go back!  Mom's going to miss me.  And I'm not going to be able to sit still in school!"
"Oh, if it could only be so, Charlie! Just come along nicelyAnd don't worry.  In case you don't like it in school, I'm bringing your teacher a miraculous ointment.  He'll put it on you and you're going to like school just like that!"
"This ointment, father, where do you have it?
"Under my jacket, son, I can't let the wind blow it away."
The church bells were ringing as they entered the town square. In town, Charlie only knew the church, where his parents sometimes took him on Sunday and below the church, he knew Aunt Albina's shop, a bakery.
"Now straighten your pocket and come along!  The other boys are going to be impressed that you already have pockets!"
Kaja smiled to himself, "If only my father knew that I have something in every one of those pockets? In one a small green frog, the other a box with a couple of hairy caterpillars, and in the third on my jacket some ground beetles! "
He smiled happily and walked with his father to church.   There were a lot of kids. There by the gate they were swarming around. Dad, the gamekeeper, pushed Charlie among them, sat himself in the first pew, and said to himself, "I have to see how our little savage behaves."
After Mass, went to school. Mr. Marik presented Charlie: "I'm signing up my son for school.  Charles
Marik is his name, but we call him Charlie. He can't pronounce Charles. When talking about himself, he's always said, 'I Charlie', and so it stuck with him. Please understand, Sir teacher, he is a child of the forest, he's almost always away from home, he's like a little wild-man savage. So that can control him, I bring you and ointment for him," and pulled out from under his coat three nice brisk rods.

"Oh, I doubt that it'll be necessary," replied the teacher, who took a look at the energetic Charlie with big dark eyes and instantly took a liking to him.
"It will be necessary dear Sir.  Just don't be stingy with the ointmentIt grows quite readily out by us in the woods. "
After registering Charlie up for schook, he admonished him and started his walk home.
For the time being, Charlie greatly enjoyed school.  He took his assigned seat and looked around the class.
"It's a really big room here," he thought, "as big as our whole houseAnd in the middle on the wall is a cross just like at home, and all around pictures -- very nice pictures."

The teacher writes and writes at his desk, and the suddenly gets up and asks, "Who of you can pray The Our Father? "
Charlie pops up: "I can and I know the Apostles Creed, and the Hail Holy Queen, the Prayer to the Guardian Angel, and oh teacher, I know a lot of prayers - I bet you don't know as many as I do!"

The teacher smiled and counted the raised hands: "Ok then, everyone, let us pray!"  And the class prayed the Our Father.
After that everyone had be quiet, and this Charlie did not like. He listened for a while, looked around for a while longer, and suddenly he remembered that he hadn't seen a squirrel or a rabbit the whole day. He remembered, too, that my father brought the teacher a couple of hazel nut rods.  For the time being, they lay quietly in the closet, but if the teacher took one in his hand and whacked someone with it, oh boy, would there be singingAt home, they also have a supply of those rods in the pantry. So that was the ointmentHe didn't care for that much.  He gets plenty of that at home.. Petey, the dog, surely must be looking for him . It's no use, he must go homeCharlie grabbed his cap in his hand, and shot like an arrow from his desk.

"Where are you going?" shouted the teacher.
"I'm sorry I no longer like it here. I must go home! I just don't have the time! "

The door closed quickly behind him, and before the teacher could get up to run after him, Charlie was already a street away.  First he sprinted, then slowed to a steady run, and once outside the town he was able to settle down to a comfortable pace.
"I was supposed to remind my aunt to come by for the goose. I have to go back!" He looked around carefully.  No one was chasing him.  So he headed back again to the church.  As he opened the door of Aunt Albina's bakery a bell rang, it was beautiful!  Oh he had pleaded with dad to buy a bell for their door as well, but to no avail!

He opened and closed the door several times and enjoying the sound of the bell.  Aunt Albina came out: "Well hello there, little school boy! I was thinking it was you.  The teacher you out pretty early! "
Kaja paused: "No, aunt, he did not let us out, I left by myself.  And you're to come to pick-up the goose!"
"So you ran away!  Well, that's just great!  Well go ahead and tell you're mom that I'll come by on Sunday!"

So Charlie left.  He didn't even get a hot-bun and slowly trudged home. That was his first day of school.

Diego Rivera Meets Homer Simpson

Recently, I had the opportunity to go to Mexico, both to Mexico City and then to the Servite mission in the mountains.  During this time, I was able to visit the Palacio de las Bellas Artes in Mexico City where a number of the works of Mexico's great muralists are displayed, several being of Diego Rivera.

One of Diego Rivera murals displayed there was of the famous Man at a Crossroads, which he originally was painting on contract in 1933 for the Rockefellers for Rockefeller Center in New York.  When it was discovered what he was painting, Rivera was fired and the mural destroyed.  The following year, the Mexican government hired him to paint a second version of the mural in its Palacio de las Bellas Artes.  It's an awesome and certainly propagandistic piece of work.  And yet nearly 80 years later, the problems it sought to address have not gone away.

Anyway, looking at the mural, I could not help myself to wish to "add" to this mural, perhaps explaining why ;-)

I certainly would not want to be labeled a Communist.  I have way too many members of my family who suffered and were even killed during by the Communists during the Communist era in Russia / Eastern-Central Europe to go that way.  On the other side, I would not want my editorializing to be taken as a specific insult to the working class.  Instead, I do think that this perhaps where we are.  From Communists to humanists in general to say nothing of politicians around election time, all love to lift up "the common man" as an ideal. Well, what if the common man really is ... Homer Simpson?  Do we really want _him_ to be guiding the destiny of our world?  Thoughts?  Comments?

Review of THEM: ADVENTURES WITH EXTREMISTS by Jon Ronson (New York: Simon & Schuster 2002)

Amazon listing - http://www.amazon.com/Them-Adventures-Extremists-Jon-Ronson/dp/0743233212

When I was in my 20s, a friend and I used wonder if Klan meetings ended with the "Wizard" thanking "[Sam and his wife] for bringing the donuts today.” Ronson’s book comes about as closest I’ve ever found to answering this question ;-).

Ronson does us all an enormous service in “THEM - Adventures with Extremists” by humanizing the quacks, and yes, the terrorist extremists that we fear. It’s as if his whole book is a testament to the truth of the line of Max in the 2008 movie “Get Smart” where Max declares to the assembled agents that he is briefing: “Ladies and gentlemen, let us never forget that though the opponents we face are bad guys -- and they _are_ bad guys – they are first human and we will never be able to defeat them until we understand them as such.”

Ronson gives us an array of stories about Islamic fundamentalists, survivalists, Klansmen, neo-Nazis and conspiracy theorists proving the point.

One learns, for instance, that even in Islamic fundamentalist circles, one can fear being pigeon-holed as a nerd. When English Islamic fundamentalist Omar Bakri showed up with Ronson at a “fishing retreat” with other “English fundamentalist Islamic bigwigs,” Omar had to endure being belittled by one of the other retreatants who said to him: “I brought a spare suitcase. Dr. Al-Masari brought a spare pair of shoes. You Omar Bakri, have bought a spare journalist.”

I learned that the Weavers actually had a point out there in Ruby Ridge, when federal agents shot and killed both Randy Weaver’s son and wife in an attempt to arrest Weaver on an arguably trumped-up weapons charge: A federal agent asked Weaver to sell him two shotguns whose barrels the agent himself had to asked be sawed off to 1/4 inch below the federal legal limit. When the dust and the blood settled after a week-long standoff that eventually included tanks, Weaver served only 16 months on the weapons charge (and nothing else) and his surviving children received over a million dollars each in an out-of-court settlement in compensation for the federal agents’ having shot and killed their mother.

Ronson also introduces us to avid self-improvement book reading Thom Robb, Grand-Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, who had been trying to move the Klan into a “positive direction.” Ronson caught-up with him in the Ozarks where Grand-Wizard Robb and his daughters were giving seminars to Klansmen on “personality types.” Robb was trying to get Klansmen to stop using the n-word, because it just got people angry, and noted to Ronson that the Klan "doesn’t burn crosses,” rather it seeks to “light” them, and that the Klan fundamentally _wasn’t_ about _hating people_ of other races or religion but about “_loving_ white, Christian people...” All this, of course, was causing Robb dissension in the Klansmen ranks. Said Jeff “Moron” Berry, Imperial Wizard of the American Knights of the Ku Klux Klan (a dissident splinter group): “Thom Robb is chickenshit. He’s a sissy. He kisses black babies. He had it all once but now he’s politically correct. Did you know that Thom Robb’s going around telling people not to say n... _and_ he’s _banned_ robe usage?”Apparently glasnost isn’t going to come easily to the Klan ;-).

Ronson introduces the reader to David Icke, who on a conspiracy speaking tour throughout western Canada had to spend weeks explaining to the Anti-Defamation League (who kept protesting and closing his events) that when he would say that the leaders of the industrialist Bilderberg Group (who met each summer in Bohemian Grove, California somewhere in the woods outside of Santa Rosa for a bizarre owl burning ritual), turned into 12 foot lizards that he was _not_ using code to mean Jews (most of the Bilderbergers were_not_ Jewish) but rather that he was saying that the leaders of the Bilderberg group _really turned into 12 foot lizards_. Icke really believed that these 12 foot shape-shifting lizard-people existed and were descendants of extraterrestrial crossbreading.

In the last chapter of his book, Ronson takes readers to the yearly Bohemian Grove conclave – owl burning and all -- which over the years has _really attracted_ a lot of the world’s industrialists and up-and-coming political leaders (including in the 1990s, Dick Cheney and both Bushes).

All in all, if one likes good stories, if one suspects that the truth is often more interesting (and more human) than the wildest conspiracies and if one believes that even the craziest people have probably more in common with us than we’d want to admit, then this book is for you. Jon Ronson's THEM is certainly a fun and provocative read!
